The CONRAD study, our first HIV research was initiated, focusing on the risk factor of
HIV transmission among Northern Thai population.
The result was published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1996
Since then, we have expanded our mission to cover all areas of HIV research
2007
RIHES, in partnership with the AIDS Research Center, Thai Red Cross were selected through a competitive process by the US National Institutes of Health
to become one of its international Clinical Trial Unit under the name of
"Thailand HIV / AIDS and Infectious Disease Clinical Trial Unit" (THAI CTU)
2009
The Research Center for Infectious Disease and Substance Use (former "Research Center for AIDS and STIs") was founded in 2009, aiming to coordinate among research teams and facilitate internal and external collaboration for more creative and effective research projects

We have joined the AIDS clinical trials group (ACTG) network, the world’s largest and longest running HIV clinical trials network since 2005. More than 600 individuals have been enrolled in 15 randomized-controlled trials involving HIV and other co – morbidities treatment at the Health Care Clinic. Our mission is to conduct high quality clinical trials to find the better options for HIV treatment and care for adults living with HIV.

Family Clinic Team
Our team has extensive experience conducting clinical studies involving maternal, pediatric, and adolescent, both HIV and non - HIV population. We continue to recieve funding support from the US NIH through the International Maternal Pediatric Adolescent AIDS Clinical Trials (IMPAACT) Network as well as other sponsors from various backgrounds such as the Thai government, Chiang Mai University and pharmaceutical companies.
As part of the IMPAACT P1093 clinical research site, we have passed the European Medicines Agency (EMA) inspection in July 2016 without major findings
Piman Clinic Team
Piman clinic was founded in 2008 as an outreach clinic to target men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TGW) who are at higher risk of HIV infection. Our research experience encompasses extensive clinical trials among MSM population, such as the iPrEx study, the MTN 017 study, and we are currently conducting on the HPTN 083 study. Other research activities besides US funded include: free HIV VCT for MSM/TGW clients since 2008, the HPV study in MSM in 2012, the pilot study for free pre-exposure prophylaxis in 2015, and the study of co-payment pre and post-exposure prophylaxis in 2017.
Health Behavioral Research Team
Dr. Arunrat and her study team conduct research in the areas of sexual behavior, STI and HIV. Experienced in working on qualitative research, and mixed methods studies in collaborative settings, and work well with people from several backgrounds, including young people, men who have sex with men, minority groups, and people living with HIV/AIDS, who are from rural and urban areas.
